Common Questions

OCCT stands for OverClock Checking Tool. It is a free, all-in-one stability testing, stress test, benchmark and system monitoring application for Windows and Linux. OCCT has been in continuous development for over 20 years with more than 70 million downloads worldwide.

OCCT is used to stress test, benchmark and monitor computer hardware. It validates CPU, GPU, RAM and power supply stability under heavy loads, detects overheating, voltage drops, frequency throttling and hardware defects. It is essential for overclocking, PC building QA, RMA diagnostics and industrial burn-in testing.

Yes. OCCT is free software. Core stability testing, monitoring, benchmarking and certificate features are accessible without cost. Multiple editions exist for different professional needs, but the fundamental diagnostic capabilities remain free for all users.

OCCT is designed for gamers and overclocking enthusiasts, custom PC builders, RMA technicians, system administrators, data center operators and industrial computing environments. Anyone who needs definitive proof of rock-solid hardware benefits from OCCT.

OCCT is safe, legitimate diagnostic software. It contains no malware, adware, spyware or hidden payloads. With over 70 million downloads and 20 years of development, OCCT is one of the most trusted stability testing tools available. Always download from the official occt.cc page and verify SHA checksums. See our trust and security policy for full details.

Stress testing software intentionally manipulates CPU, GPU and memory at a low system level, which triggers heuristic false positives in antivirus engines. This is a known industry-wide issue affecting all hardware diagnostic tools. Verify your download with SHA-256 checksums and digital signatures. If verified, add OCCT to your exclusion list. Read our antivirus troubleshooting guide for step-by-step instructions.

Download only from the official occt.cc download page. After downloading, compute the SHA-256 hash of the file and compare it to the published checksum. Additionally, right-click the installer, open Properties, and verify the Digital Signatures tab shows the official publisher certificate.

OCCT is a local hardware diagnostic tool. Test reports and monitoring data are stored locally on your machine. OCCT does not include adware or data harvesting components. Stability certificates you choose to share are generated and distributed at your discretion.

For basic hardware checks, 30 minutes per component is a reasonable minimum. For overclock stability certification, run each test for at least 1 hour. Professional PC builders and industrial burn-in processes often run multi-hour or overnight test sequences. Longer tests increase confidence in stability.

OCCT itself does not damage properly functioning hardware. However, stress testing pushes components to their thermal and electrical limits. Inadequate cooling, failing components or extreme overclocks can cause instability or, in rare cases with already-defective hardware, accelerated failure. Always monitor temperatures and use OCCT responsibly with adequate cooling.

OCCT offers multiple CPU test algorithms optimized for different detection scenarios. The standard OCCT mode provides the fastest error detection for most use cases. Linpack mode stresses floating-point units more aggressively. Choose based on your checks needs; the standard OCCT mode is recommended for general stability testing.

Stability certificates are shareable proof that your system passed a battery of rigorous pre-established tests. PC builders use them for customer delivery documentation. Overclockers share them to demonstrate validated configurations. Certificates include test parameters, duration and results for full transparency.

Yes. OCCT supports parallel testing of multiple GPUs, even from different brands, simultaneously without requiring display connections. This is ideal for multi-GPU workstations, render farms and headless GPU burn-in testing.

Yes. OCCT brings its full suite of stability testing, monitoring and benchmarking features to Linux. It is suitable for data centers, embedded systems, high-performance computing and any Linux environment where hardware reliability checks is essential.

Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) with a modern x86-64 processor, 4 GB RAM minimum (8 GB+ recommended), DirectX 11 GPU for 3D tests, and OpenCL 1.2+ for compute tests. Linux requires a 64-bit distribution with appropriate GPU drivers. Administrator or root privileges are recommended for full sensor access. See the download page for complete requirements.

The current stable Windows release is version 16.1.10.99. OCCT v17 beta is also available with a major memory test overhaul, performance optimizations and new features. Visit the download page for the latest versions and release details.

Yes. OCCT is legal software designed for legitimate hardware testing, diagnostics and quality assurance. It is used by individuals, businesses and industrial operations worldwide. Users must comply with local laws and use OCCT only on systems they own or have authorization to test.

Yes. OCCT is widely used in commercial PC building, prebuilt system QA, RMA technician workflows and industrial burn-in processes. Stability certificates provide professional documentation for customer deliveries and warranty checks.

OCCT must be used ethically for hardware checks and diagnostics on systems you own or are authorized to test. Do not use OCCT to intentionally damage hardware, disrupt services or test systems without permission. Users bear full responsibility for their testing activities. Read the complete policy on our trust and security page.

OCCT is free freeware developed transparently with public release notes, verifiable checksums and open development practices. While not fully open source in the traditional sense, OCCT maintains transparency through published checksums, signed binaries and continuous public development communication.
